Having no library experience prior to my studies in this course, I found studying ETL505, Bibliographic Standards in Education, a challenging and enjoyable experience. I have always enjoyed puzzles and once I started exploring cataloguing I found I particularly enjoyed it. The completion of Assignment 2 using SCIS Subject Headings and Dewey Decimal Classification consolidated my understanding and skills in cataloguing.
The opportunity to visit specialist libraries during Sydney 1 Study Visit 2014 signified the importance of using Dewey Decimal Classification beyond five decimal points. Visiting the Art Gallery of NSW and the Australian Museum Research Library demonstrated specific classifications well beyond the decimal place were crucial in users finding resources they were looking for. “Excellent teacher librarians provide access to information resources through efficient, effective and professionally-managed systems” (ASLA, 2004).

During my prac placement I observed the practice of genre classification of the fiction collection (Byrne, 2014d). This is a concept I incorporated in the Future Proofing Report for ETL504. The aim of genre classification is to increase fiction circulation and it was evident to me, during prac, the high circulation rates for the fiction collection. Research has shown increased recreational reading improves students learning (Hay & Todd 2010, p. 11). As a TL the selection of appropriate genre classifications, based on the users of the library, will be a strategy I will implement to support the recreational reading of students and teachers.

On my prac placement, I also observed the school using their own cataloguing system for history resources by creating a War and Conflict room (Byrne, 2014a). All resources pertaining to any conflict during any war were relocated to these shelves. The Library Assistant responsible for cataloguing has spent much time on reassigning Dewey Decimal Classifications to more specifically group resources together, particularly to shelf all materials of specific battles together. My observations were that circulation rates for War and Conflict resources were high and students studying History were well adept in perusing the shelves for the resources they needed. The success of this project has put the creation of an Ancient History room to be on the agenda once the reassignment of War and Conflict call numbers is complete.
